Climate alarmists spread myths and declare impending doom. ———

“The world is going to end in 12 years if we don’t address climate change!” says Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Really? 12 years?

John Stossel recently moderated a debate held by The Heartland Institute. Well, not a debate … because climate alarmists who were invited didn’t show.

“Please … let’s have a discussion!” begs astrophysicist Willie Soon.

Stossel says the panel convincingly debunked four myths. One is the new claim: “we only have 12 years to act.”

Pat Michaels, former president of the American Association of State Climatologists, says, “It’s warmed up around one degree Celsius since 1900, and life expectancy DOUBLED … yet [if] that temperature ticks up another half a degree … the entire system crashes? That’s the most absurd belief.”

Climatology Professor David Legates adds, “In twelve years it’ll be 12 more years.”

The 3 scientists argue that even if the planet warms by 5 degrees, humans can adjust. We already have. People in Holland did.

Holland is a low-lying country. Much of it is below sea-level. So many years ago, the Dutch built dikes to prevent flooding. Michaels says, “Are you telling me that the people in Miami are so dumb that they’re just going to sit there and drown?”

“You acknowledge though the water is rising?” asks Stossel.

Legates interjects, “Yes, the water has been rising for approximately 20,000 years.”

Another myth they bust: government action today will save us.

“The Obama’s administration’s model projects that the amount of global warming that would be saved [by the US] going to ZERO emissions tomorrow … would be 14 hundredths of a degree Celsius,” says Michaels.

It wouldn’t stop global warming but: “You’ll sure have an impoverished dark country.” he continues.

“Global warming is why hurricanes are getting worse” and the idea that “carbon dioxide is a pollutant that just does harm” are two other myths the scientists debunk.

Stossel concludes by asking, “Are they right? It’s hard to believe they are when so many serious people are so worried. I wish there were a real debate! Why won’t the other side debate?”

0:00 This environmental catastrophe bearing down on us

0:03 I keep hearing that we’re killing the earth

0:05 How dare you.

0:08 You have stolen my dreams and my childhood

0:11 But wait, I’ve been a consumer reporter for years,

0:14 I’ve covered so many scares.

0:17 Plague, famine, and perpetual war will kill us.

0:21 We’re going to run out of oil.

0:23 Nuclear power will give us cancer,

0:25 killer bees swarm ever closer,

0:27 bird flu, flesh-eating bacteria

0:31 The list of terrible things that were

0:32 going to get us is long,

0:34 and yet we’re living longer than ever.

0:37 None of those scares turned out to

0:39 be as frightening as the warnings.

0:42 But I’m told global warming is different!

0:45 Entire ecosystems are collapsing.

0:49 We are in the beginning of a mass extinction.

0:52 The alarmists have evidence that supports their fears.

0:55 Temperature is rising.

0:57 The UN predicts that it’ll rise another 2 to 5 degrees.

1:00 What do we do when the land we live on

1:02 is under attack?

1:03 But does that justify the fear?

1:05 Climate change is not a lie

1:07 so please don’t let our planet die

1:09 Does it justify this claim?

1:11 We have 12 years to act.

1:12 We have 12 years

1:13 We have 12 years before the effects are irreversible

1:16 Really?

1:17 12 years?

1:18 It’s warmed up around one degree Celsius since 1900,

1:21 and life expectancy doubled the

1:23 industrialized democracies

1:25 And yet that temperature ticks up another half a degree,

1:29 and the entire system crashes?

1:32 That’s the most absurd belief

1:34 I recently moderated this debate

1:36 on climate change at the Heartland Institute.

1:38 Well, not a debate…

1:40 because the alarmists who were invited didn’t show.

1:44 Heartland invited many

1:46 Please come over here and sit next to that

1:49 place and let’s have a discussion.

1:51 There’s a lot more people want to hear what

1:53 you have to say.

1:54 Climate alarmists never agree to debate.

1:57 We would love to offer you the airtime

1:59 we will give it to you

2:00 I’ll give you a special phone number that

2:01 goes to this phone

2:03 I invited Al Gore on my show often,

2:05 but he would never come

2:07 In order to solve the climate crisis

2:09 He makes lots of speeches,

2:11 but won’t respond to people who disagree.

2:14 It’s too bad that the alarmists won’t debate

2:16 because so much of what they say deserves debate

2:20 The world is going to end in 12 years

2:22 if we don’t address climate change

2:23 12 years.

2:24 Well, and in 12 years it’ll be 12 more years

2:27 David Legates is a professor of climatology

2:30 at the University of Delaware.

2:32 Pat Michaels is former president

2:34 of the American Association of State Climatologists.

2:37 Willie Soon is an astrophysicist.

2:40 It’s all about handwaving, it’s about emotion,

2:43 about sending out kids in protest,

2:45 it has nothing to do with the science.

2:47 This group pointed out that even if the planet

2:49 warms by 5 degrees, humans can adjust.

2:53 People in Holland did, years ago

2:55 They said, we’re going to adapt to

2:58 the fact that we’re a low lying country,

2:59 and we’re going to build these dikes,

3:00 and we’re going to build these pumps,

3:02 are you telling me that the people in Miami

3:04 are so dumb that

3:06 they’re just going to sit there and drown?

3:08 You acknowledge though the water is rising?

3:11 Yes, the water has been rising for approximately

3:14 20,000 years, and probably will continue

3:16 But we can adapt, like Holland has.

3:19 Except,

3:20 [Hurricane]

3:21 The alarmists say hurricanes and other storms

3:23 are getting worse.

3:24 It’s getting stronger and stronger

3:26 the winds are getting harder and harder

3:28 No they aren’t!

3:30 You can take a look at all the hurricanes

3:32 around the planet.

3:34 We can see them since 1970,

3:35 because we got global satellite coverage.

3:38 Right.

3:38 And we can measure their power,

3:39 and we can add up their power.

3:41 And there is no significant increase whatsoever.

3:44 There is no relationship between hurricane activity,

3:47 and the surface temperature of the planet

3:49 The claim that hurricanes are getting worse

3:52 and the 12 year deadline

3:53 were 2 of 4 myths I heard the Heartland panel

3:56 convincingly debunk.

3:58 Myth #3 was that government action today

4:01 will save us

4:03 We have to act now

4:04 The Obama administration’s model

4:07 projects that the amount of global warming

4:09 that would be saved

4:10 for going to zero emissions tomorrow.

4:13 You don’t know how to do that.

4:14 Put you back in the Stone Age,

4:16 but let’s just say we did it.

4:18 Would be 14 hundredths of a degree Celsius.

4:22 So no real effect on the climate, but

4:25 You’ll sure have an impoverished dark country,

4:27 won’t you?

4:28 Myth 4: the idea that carbon dioxide

4:31 is carbon pollution that just does harm,

4:34 and threatens the food supply.

4:36 There are places on earth where it is

4:38 just greening up like crazy.

4:40 So, if you’re really concerned about the plants,

4:43 more carbon dioxide makes them not just grow faster,

4:46 but also makes them more water efficient.

4:49 Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas.

4:51 but it also helps feed the world.

4:53 A lot of people pretend to know about climate.

4:56 Pretend to have studied it.

4:57 Pretend to come up with these answers,

4:58 and then make these proclamations to scare you

5:01 so that you’ll do what we want you to do.

5:03 But if what that alarmists say is not true,

5:05 why would the the international

5:07 panel on climate change,

5:09 the United Nations, go along with exaggerations?

5:12 Governments like control.

5:14 Most governments want to keep control,

5:15 and most want governments to get

5:17 bigger and bigger over time

5:18 IPCC does stand for

5:23 Carbon dioxide becomes that molecule

5:25 by which we can take control of your lives,

5:28 of your efforts, and everything that goes on

5:31 Are they right?

5:32 It’s confusing when there are

5:33 so many serious people who are so worried,

5:37 I wish there were a real debate.

5:39 Why won’t the other side debate?
